WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?

Blue light, in its natural form, is used by the body to regulate the sleep and wake cycle (circadian rhythm). However, exposure to additional artificial blue light during the day and more so at night, can have adverse affects on not only your daily sleep, but your long term retinal health as-well. Excessive blue light exposure during the night suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that influences the body’s circadian rhythm, this is associated with sleep difficulty and disruption.

Although moderate exposure of natural blue light is relatively friendly to the eye, the additional exposure to artificial blue light can be detrimental to your eye health and has potential to cause disease. When we look at screens at night, the body’s circadian rhythm is thrown off, this explains the extensive sleep problems and fatigue people experience.

WHERE DOES BLUE LIGHT COME FROM?

The primary source of natural blue light comes from the sun. This blue light, in moderation, is essential for the body’s circadian rhythm to function normally. However, we are often overexposed to blue light when we use devices throughout the day and then continue the use after dark. Devices that produce blue light include:

✔ Mobile Phones
✔ Computers
✔ Televisions
✔ Tablets
✔ Fluorescent & LED Lighting

HOW CAN BLUE LIGHT AFFECT YOU?

Overexposure to blue light, beyond natural levels, can be detrimental to your eye health and circadian rhythm. By extending your screen time into the night, you are exposing your eyes to the harmful affects from your devices which makes it very difficult to fall asleep as it fools your body into staying awake.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST BLUE LIGHT EXPOSURE

One way is to put away all digital devices 2-3 hours before bedtime. However, for some of us, our jobs prevent us from staying clear of the screens and artificial lighting after dark. This is where blue light glasses play a vital role in both the workplace and at home for preventing any long term damage to your eyes.

There are many other ways to reduce your exposure to blue light; one option is to modify your mobile phone or computer itself. You can reduce the brightness and enable night mode on these devices, however, doing this compromises on the vibrancy and range of colors you can see, and is also not entirely effective.
In conclusion, the easiest and most practical option is to wear a pair of blue light blocking glasses during the day and more importantly during the night, when using digital devices or being exposed to artificial lighting for extended periods of time.

HOW DO BLUE LIGHT FILTERING GLASSES WORK?

Blue light filtering lenses being installed into glasses are a relatively new technology that has quickly become an important part of many users’ everyday lives. Blue light glasses work by blocking or absorbing blue light, and in some cases UV light, from coming into contact with the eyes.
A study done by the University of Houston found that participants wearing blue light glasses all day showed a 58% increase in their nighttime melatonin levels. With higher levels of melatonin being secreted, this will drastically improve the body's ability to fall asleep easily and get an extra 1.5 - 2 hours of sleep per night. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WEARING BLUE LIGHT GLASSES?

Approximately 6 in 10 people show symptoms of digital eyestrain after prolonged exposure to artificial blue light; some of the symptoms include headaches, loss of focus, fatigue, and sleep disruption. Fortunately, there are simple solutions to alleviate these common symptoms, one being blue light glasses. Some of the benefits of wearing blue light glasses include:

✔ Combat Headaches
✔ Alleviate Fatigue & Eye Discomfort
✔ Get Better Sleep
✔ Look & Feel Confident
✔ Fight Against Age-Related Macular Degeneration

SHOULD YOU WEAR BLUE LIGHT GLASSES?

If you often work with screens, or if you feel like they are having a detrimental impact on your eyes, blue light blocking glasses can be one of the simplest and most stylish ways to provide protection.
People who use blue light glasses at work or in their daily lives report that they have helped to reduce headaches, improve their sleep and stop the eyestrain they experience when using digital devices.
